Match Report 30-3-08

Old Williamsonians U14             :     Ashford U14    3

The team, coaches and some future stars! 30th March 2008 (Click to enlarge)

The OW U14s produced probably their best performance of the season against a good Ashford side. Ashford started brightly and attacked strongly through their excellent centre-forward.However their attacks often broke down against the accurate tackling of Sam Heyes supported well by Chris Early, Nick Gaul, Luka , Mohit Busson and the Haddow brothers.

But it was not long before Tom Pinder received the ball in mid-field and threaded his way through his bemused opponents to plant the ball in the back of the net. OWs continued to attack in numbers with good combination through Pinder , Jacob Newnham and Alistair Saunders and it was Newnham who extended the lead with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the circle.OWs extended their lead to four goals with further efforts by Newnham and Pinder.Ashford then rallied and although Jon Mann made several outstanding saves Ashford clawed one back before half time.

The second half started with Ashford attacking strongly and although they conceded again through the irrepressable Pinder they stretched the OW defence and pulled back two further goals to make the score 5 - 3.

OWs then showed their maturity by raising their game to finally run out 8 - 3 winners.Pinder increased his goal tally to 5 and Newnham to 3.

Match Report 3-2-08

Old Williamsonians U14             :     Bromley & Beckenham U14    1

Against a team bristling with county players OWs knew they were in for a tough game and so it proved. They were under pressure for long periods of the game and did well to keep the scoreline to four at half -time. Displaying a high level of skill Brombeck set up many clever moves and managed to take their chances from close range in OWs circle. Lawrence Claughton made some good saves and with Luka and Tom Judge making some telling tackles OWs did their best to break out of defence. Nick Gaul and Chris Early (returning to the side) endeavoured to get the ball to Tom Pinder to use his silky skills. However OWs found that any pass less than 100% accurate was intercepted by an opposition that seemed to anticipate every move. Strikers Jack Mac Donald and Jacob Newnham found it difficult to make any headway when threatening moves broke down before before they could get any shooting opportunities.

The second half continued in much the same vein but OWs managed to create more chances and Newnham went close with a powerful shot from the edge of the circle. OWs eventually found there way through via the irrepressible Pinder who beat at least 3 defenders to calmly place the ball beyond the Brom Beck keeper. Brombecks skill shone through and they managed 3 more good goals before the end.

OWs kept going forward and their young players will hopefully now have an even better idea of the level of performance they are aiming for.

Match Report 20-1-08

Bromley & Beckenham U14            :     Old Williamsonians U14     1

OWs youngsters new this would be hard game against a skilful Brom-Beck team. The first half was fairly even with both sides setting up some promising moves. It was probably Brom-Beck who deserved the lead but the found Jonathan Mann in superb form in the OWs goal, making several top-class saves. OWs found it difficult to get their strike partnership of Jacob Newnham and Jack MacDonald much service. Newnham went close with a powerful shot but goals would not come.

The second half continued with much the same pattern with Brom-Beck posing the greater threat. Luka, Sam Heyes, Mohit Busson and the Haddow brothers fought hard to deny their opponents but inevitably they took the lead with a well worked move finding a Brom-Beck forward unmarked at the post to give Mann in goal no chance.

OWs continued to fight hard through the promptings of Tom Pinder in the middle ,but with the greater skill-level throughout the team Brom-Beck converted two further good chances. However OWs did not allow heads to drop and pulled a goal back through Nathan Tulpo when a well-worked move found him in a scoring position at the post. This was however the last significant action of the match.

OWs gave a good account of themselves and hopefully learned much from playing the most skilful team they have come up against to date.

Match Report 9-12-07

Sutton Valence U14            :     Old Williamsonians U14     4

Against a surprisingly strong Sutton Valence side OW's Boys knew they were in for a tough game from the start. Indeed they went behind early on when a well-taken cross-shot beat Jonathan Mann at the far post.

This spurred OWs to greater efforts with Pinder and Heyes setting up several promising moves and after Newnham had blazed over the top they eventually equalised after a mazy run from Pinder finished with an unstoppable shot from the OW forward. After some hard work at the back OWs took the lead through a fierce shot from Newnham. Sutton continued to attack with some skill and but for some heroic work by the Haddow brothers Nick Gaul and Dan Barker they might have got back into it.

OWs extended their lead through Pinder but then seemed to relax and allowed Sutton back into the game with a scrambled goal. However OWs scored their fourth goal when the ball found its way to Jack MacDonald who made no mistake. Sutton continued to fight and reduced the deficit to one goal with a good reversed stick shot beyond Mann .

This led to a nervous ten minutes for OWs in holding on to their lead. MacDonald might have made the result safer when he burst down the wing and cut in to see his shot just go wide.

Match Report 2-12-07

Ashford U14            :     Old Williamsonians U14     3

After the convincing wins of the previous three games OWs came up against a much more skilful and determined side. From the start Ashford began with a higher tempo and OWs found themselves penned in their own half and the defence found themselves fully tested. But with Luka, Tom Judge, Josh Hayes and Dan Barker in particular making some telling interceptions and with goalkeeper Johnathan Mann in commanding form OWs held out and somewhat against the run of play they took the lead through Tom Pinder with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the circle. However this brought renewed efforts from Ashford and they proceeded to score three well taken goals before half-time. This produced a stern but encouraging talk from coach Graham Lee at half time and with a couple of positional changes OW s came out with renewed determination for the second half.

They soon pulled a goal back when Jacob Newnham received the ball from Pinder and calmly placed the ball beyond the reach of the Ashford keeper. Encouraged by this OWs went on the attack again and with a move demonstrating the effect of quick first-time passes involving several players including Nick Gaul ,Darwin Hamilton -Radford, Sam Heyes and Newnham OWs cut through the Ashford defence with Pinder finishing off probably the best move of the game.

This signalled renewed pressure from Ashford but with "man of the match" Mann in goal pulling off a series of wonder saves OWs held firm but were unable to find the net again for the winning goal.

Match Report 18-11-07

Old Williamsonians U14            :     Holcombe U14     1

Despite the eventual scoreline OWs youngsters had to fight hard, particularly in the first half , to gain the ascendancy .

After an early period of even play with Holcombe looking the more likely to score OWs took the lead with a well taken shot by Jacob Newnham from the edge of the circle. Holcombe proceeded to pull this goal back fairly quickly ,but OWs scored their second before the interval with a well placed short corner strike by the prolific Newnham. After the interval OWs stepped up the pressure with the defence looking much more solid than previous weeks with Tom Judge Sam Heyes & Luka breaking up any threat from Holcombe.

This left the mercurial Tom Pinder to weave his magic in midfield setting up Newnham for his hat trick goal and himself slotting home two further goals after good work by Chris Early Jack Harper and Dan Barker . Pinder completed his hat-trick with a well struck shot from the edge of the circle after beating at least four players with a mazy run from midfield. Jack MacDonald was rewarded for some good unselfish work earlier on with the final goal of the game.

Match Report 4-11-07

Old Williamsonians U14            :     BBHC U14     2

OW's youngsters produced an encouraging performance against their BBHC counterparts. Several of the team were playing their first competitive match for the club but produced a solid performance all round to eventually run out easy winners.

With the experienced Tom Pinder and the Haddow brothers dominating the midfield the forwards were given plenty of attacking opportunities .They took an early lead through Jacob Newnham who then proceeded to net three further strikes.OW s rang the changes with their four available subs and for a while BBHC got back into the game and pulled back two goals. But as OWs settled down again through Heidi Pentecost and Kirsty Sullivan making some telling tackles in midfield and some powerful interceptions from Luka ,Sam Heyes and Tom Judge, OWs pulled away again with further goals from Nick Gaul and Darwin Hamilton-Radford.

FANTASTIC SEASON FOR YOUNG WILLIAMSONIANS

Old Williamsonian Hockey Club U14 XI has just finished an extremely enjoyable season.

The boys deserve special mention for their enthusiasm and dedication. Most of these 20 or so lads started this season with about a year’s hockey experience (which in itself had been a steep learning curve) and in most cases with only a semblance of awareness about the game, tactics and team spirit.

Nearly everyone in the main squad of 13 attended all training sessions; all were eager to learn and always worked and played to the best of their ability. We had an initial convincing win 7-0 against BBHC. Against Herne Bay we lost 6-4, but the boys displayed superb temperament and sportsmanship beyond their years in the face of aggressive opposition.

In November we played away at Burnt Ash. We played well as a team, but had a 2-1 win snatched from us by a last minute equalizer. When that was followed by a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Tunbridge Wells, one could have understood if heads might have dropped.

It was not, however, to be. OW U14s quickly showed that they had a maturity beyond their years in that a strong desire to win was balanced by an overall enjoyment of the sport an unquenchable optimism. A 3-3 draw against Folkestone was an excellent team performance, which perhaps deserved victory.

Another thrilling game against Burnt Ash (but this time Ash grabbed a 4-3 win in the last minute!) was followed by a 6-2 defeat against a good Anchorians side. The playing shape was nevertheless getting better and better. On the day it all came together Ashford were the unfortunate victims of the 7-0 scoreline. Canterbury B was a game which may well have been lost at the beginning of the season, but OWs ran out clear 5-1 winners. The last match was against Sevenoaks on a hot day and neither team produce their best. The 1-1 draw was probably a fair result.

OWs junior hockey has always emphasized the fun and sportsman ship of the game as well bringing an understanding of the will to win and how playing as team improves results and enjoyment. The camaraderie of the lads this season made them stronger as a unit as time went on, which in turn led to success in terms of results. For everyone involved, it was great to be part of it.

Congratulations to the main squad (in alphabetical order): Alex Cairns, Lawrence Claughton, Amrik Dhinsa, Alex Gaul, Jonathan Horsington, Alfie Mason, Ashley Pentecost, Tom Pinder, Kieran Steers, Josh Sullivan, Nathan Tulpo, Michael Tyrrell and Oliver Vinnicombe, and the other members of the squad who also played their part: Dan Barker, Nick Gaul, Jack Harper, Sam Heyes, Tom Starling and Ben Stroud.A Word from the Management
