Match Report 15-3-08

Sevenoaks 2           6     :       OW Ladies 1        2

The final game of the season was quickly upon OWHC and they're position at 7th confirms their place in the Premier division for the 2008/2009 season. Sevenoaks, however, still had the opportunity for promotion and OWHC were aware that their opponents would battle hard for the win. The relaxed, and season-practised, play of OWHC in the first 10 minutes ensured that the lower positioned team dominated possession and a well won short corner was deftly converted by Michelle Russell.

OWHC's attempted to hold firm and retain their lead, but the promotion-hungry Sevenoaks pushed all they had forward and quickly moved into the lead. OWHC attempted to plug the gaps, but were unable to stop the onslaught of Sevenoaks players and with 10 minutes to go, the Home team were 5-1 up.

Dawn Wallwork finished up with a fantastically taken opportunity, before Sevenoaks also scored; final score 6-2 to Sevenoaks. The scoreline does not provide a fair reflection of the game, and the fluid passing and solid defence by OWHC, reflective of their season, proved that they were not huge gaps between the top team and the Rochester side. Notable performance from young player, Erin, more than holding her own against her opponent.

Player of the Match: Alex Williams Thank you to Michelle. Debbie and Cheryl for all their hard work this year!

Match Report 8-3-08

OW Ladies 1           3     :       Meopham         2

The penultimate match of the season found the teams place 6th and 7th facing each other.

OW’s were in a determined mood, and started brightly with some fluid passing and good movement off the ball. Pushing Meopham back on their heels resulted in a short corner. Dawn Wallwork hit the ball out to Deb Sullivan who slipped it to Michelle Russell, and Russell cleanly struck the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

OW’s kept strong and mounted a number of attacks, and any break away attacks by Meopham were calmly cleared by the solid defensive play of Liz Tyrrell, Alex Williams, Sally Bryant and Debbie Pentecost, and Player of the match Lucinda De Grey controlled the midfield meticulously. Half time 1-0.

Ironically, after a stern talk by OW Captain Michelle Russell (placing an emphasis on keeping focussed and maintaining control) Meopham caught OW’s unawares within a couple of minutes of the restart and scored an equaliser. This only amplified OW’s resolve and OW’s stepped up a gear and applied pressure. After a period of sustained attack OW’s were awarded another short corner. Dawn Wallwork hit the ball out to Deb Sullivan, whose shot at goal was parried away by the goal keeper, and Dawn Wallwork was there to pull the ball away from the goalie and deftly lift the ball into the goal.

Meopham were not ready to give up and pushed for the equaliser, which came from open play in the last quarter of the match. However OW’s were not content to share the spoils and pushed forward again for the winner.

Another short corner in the last ten minutes of the game – again hit out by Dawn Wallwork, found Michelle Russell on the edge of the circle. Russell calmly took the ball passed two defenders and slotted the ball into the corner of the goal.

The last few minutes of the game saw Meopham striving to find the equaliser, but good defensive play by OW’s ensured that all three points went to the home team.

Match Report 1-3-08

OW Ladies 1           3     :       Ashford         4

OW’s had an early start against Ashford and were looking to reverse the result of the previous meeting. The game started with both teams dominating in periods. It was Ashford who broke the deadlock halfway through the first half with a strike from the top of the circle. Within minutes of the restart OW’s equalised when Michelle Russell squeezed the ball over the line after some determined pressure from Dawn Wallwork. Half time 1-1.

OW’s came out fighting in the second half and again both teams created some good scoring opportunities. Ashford again took the lead when a shot at goal took a deflection off of Alex Williams’s stick, looped over goalkeeper Sally Kelly’s head and into the goal. Again OW’s were quick to respond when the combination of Deb Sullivan and Dawn Wallwork converted from OW’s first short corner.

Play went from end to end until fifteen minutes from time Ashford took the lead again. OW’s were caught napping when from the restart Ashford added another.

Excellent defensive work by player of the match Debbie Pentecost lead to OW’s pushing forward to try and get something from the game. Some good team play led to Michelle Russell picking up the ball on the 25 yard line and feeding Dawn Wallwork on the run, and Wallwork slipped the ball past the keeper. With the score at 4-3 the final five minutes were tense as OW’s continued to push forward to find the equaliser. Despite their best efforts OW’s were unable to score.

OW’s played some very good hockey and matched an Ashford side who reached the semi-finals of the Kent Plate. It was a good performance but a disappointing result.
