5th XI Link to last weekend's league results Captain : Kevin Haselden
Match Report 15-3-08 Folkestone 7 0 : Old Williamsonians 5 4 Willies returned to league action on Saturday, keen to end a recent run of close-fought defeats and continue their push for promotion against a Folkestone side who haven’t enjoyed the best of seasons. Early Old Boys’ pressure opened up the home defence on a couple of occasions, as Alex Gaul found plenty of space in the centre of midfield and his astute passes created scoring opportunities for Brian Phipps and Josh Sullivan. Folkestone’s keeper was equal to these attempts, but was beaten when Phipps applied a neat finish to a smart move instigated by JJ Horsington. Willies continued to enjoy more possession but ran the ball into trouble too often when simple passes would have opened up the Folkestone defence. However, Peter Wright converted a right wing cross to double their advantage as Kevin Haselden and Pete Meyers used their experience to snuff out the attacking threat of the home side. As the game progressed, Alfie Mason came to the fore with some well-timed tackles and telling passes to set up further attacking moves. Despite their lead, the Rochester side were not playing particularly fluidly, and Folkestone began to come back into the game. Clive Whittington once again showed his determination, breaking up home attacks and launching himself forward whenever possible. One fine run took him into the ‘D’, and an intelligent touch set up Wright for a chance that was smashed high into the net. Brian Phipps then picked up a long ball and laid it into the path of Josh Sullivan, who was unlucky to touch it with his foot before beating the home keeper, and Alex Gaul then created a great opportunity for himself, though his shot did not match the quality of the run. Folkestone continued to try to get back into the match, and Willies’ Keeper Lawrence Claughton made two good stops in quick succession to thwart them. Paul Judge seemed to be enjoying his switch from the 4th XI, brought about by the demands of work, and when Whittington stormed through from midfield and cracked a fine shot home, the Willies knew that the points were theirs. Credit should go to both sides for a game played in good spirit and to Captain Haselden for navigating around ‘Operation Stack’ on the M20. Match Report 8-3-08 Old Williamsonians 5 2 : New Beccs 4 Willies 5th string enjoyed a rest from League action on Saturday when they hosted a rare friendly game against New Beccs, a side that Willies had beaten narrowly and drawn with in competitive games earlier in the season. Still missing defensive linchpin Clive Whittington, and also not having Pete Meyers to call on this week, the home side were always likely to face an uphill struggle against an experienced New Beccs side. But it was Willies who started the strongest, and Tom Pinder created the first goal after his mazy run and firm shot was half cleared into space and Peter Wright gratefully slammed the rebound home. Further good work from Willies’ youngsters in midfield, Anthony Coveney and Alex Gaul, kept the home side in command and a super move resulted in Brian Phipps scoring a second with a neat finish from close range. New Beccs pulled one goal back from a short corner before half time, but Kevin Haselden had to make a number of good interceptions to prevent further damage. Willies then lost Sam Heyes to a pre-arranged family function (the game having started late due to traffic problems delaying the New Beccs ‘ keeper) and immediately fell behind as the defence lost their shape without his tenacious tackling and intelligent covering. New Beccs scored again, despite the best efforts of ‘keeper Lawrence Claughton, and their confidence increased as further players were pushed forward to press the creaking Old Boys’ back line. Amrik Dhinsa showed some good touches on the right, and looked more confident as the game went on – another good young prospect for the Old Boys. Paul Judge was unlucky to miss two tackles in a New Beccs’ attack, and then concede a corner as the ball was half cleared via his foot. Sam Budd was introduced to the fray, and his pace allowed the Willies to relieve some of the pressure, but their best chances in the second half came from short corners which Wright was unable to convert. New Beccs then took the lead with another corner conversion, and, though Willies had some possession through Mike Tyrell on the right wing, they were unable to find the final pass to open up a resolute New Beccs defence. Willies’ finally conceded a fourth goal after a defensive muddle, and could not find a way back. But this was a thoroughly enjoyable game, played in a good spirit and much better than going shopping on a wet Saturday afternoon. Now they have two important League games to win, and complete an excellent season. Match Report 1-3-08 Old Bordenians 3 : Old Williamsonians 5 2 Second placed Willies travelled to the League leaders on Saturday morning, knowing that only a win would keep their hopes of landing the title alive. But would they miss the experience and inspiration of Captain Kevin Haselden and his defensive partner Clive Whittington, both away for this crucial game? Ultimately, the answer was ‘probably not’, for, although the points were eventually lost, it was unlikely that the defence could have played any better, with Pete Meyers outstanding in the sweeper role and Sam Heyes tenacious in his battle with Borden’s strong centre forward. The early exchanges were even, with few chances falling to either side, though Laurence Claughton in the Willies’ goal had to be alert to clear when the home side broke away quickly. Martin Pinder assumed authority in midfield, and it was a super Willies passing move that finally broke the deadlock, Pinder finding Stuart Seymour in the circle who astutely picked out Brian Phipps by the far post for a smart finish. Another Bordenians’ attack saw Claughton exposed to a one-on-one but he stood firm as the resulting shot cannoned off his chest for a fine save. The Willies’ defence continued to cover, tackle and clear as the home side mounted further attacks, but Alex Gaul and Kevin Swindin each played a full part in keeping the lively Borden forwards at bay ‘till halftime. Willies’ young midfielders Anthony Coveney and Tom Pinder worked hard to find space as the game became more compressed, both showing some good touches and great determination in winning and distributing the ball, whilst Stuart Seymour led the line up front with strong running and intelligent passing. Borden continued to threaten and a string of short corners, awarded for a range of offences, were repelled until Willies added to their lead 15 minutes into the second half when a half-fit Peter Wright converted a right wing cross. 2 – 0 and whilst the Rochester side were not comfortable, they now had a lead to protect. But the League leaders showed just why they have averaged 4 goals in every game with an immediate response – a super solo goal that left Claughton with no chance. Willies brought Mike Tyrell back into the game in the hope that his speed down the right wing would stretch the hosts’ defence, but clear chances were few and far between as Borden picked up the pace, sensing that Willies were beginning to tire under the onslaught. With 10 minutes left, a short corner finally brought the home side back on terms, and, though Meyers then saved brilliantly on the line, when a further corner was slammed home shortly after, the points were won. OW’s can pride themselves on pushing a good side all the way, and the consensus afterwards was that perhaps a draw would have been a fair result – but since when was sport fair?
