Match Report 10-11-07

Old Williamsonians  4        1     :       Cobdown 1        1

After too many disappointing results, the 4th team showed much greater commitment and the will to win. With Carl Dockwray organising the defence and making some telling tackles, he inspired both Matt Webster and Alex Cairns to show grit and determination in keeping at bay the early attacks by Cobdown.

The 3 Musketeers Mason, Tulppo and JJ Horsington started to find their feet and the signs were promising, however Cobdown broke through and scored. The difference this week was the team did not drop their heads and with encouragement from Martin Futter, half time was reached with no further damage being made.

Minor injuries forced changes early in the 2nd half and Joe Hill started to boss the Mid field and with Man of Match James Tindle dropping back to sweeper the Team settled. Old Willies started to play further up the park and Nathan Tulppo along with Alfie Mason made some penetrating runs. Mick O’Shea his ears ringing from a Hair dryer blast from Manager Judge burst in to action and from the resultant carnage Josh Sullivan struck and a deserved equaliser was gained. Nigel Copplestone used his experience to work some space and with better supply should have put Old Willies in front. With a nothing ventured nothing gained approach Manager Judge sent O’Shea up front and only the Woodwork prevented a glorious end to the Match.

A much more promising afternoon with a hard earned point as a fair reward.

Match Report 8-9-07

Sutton Valence         3     :       Old Williamsonians  4       7

OW’s IV string travelled to Sutton Valence for their first friendly fixture of the season. There were some communication problems when the team arrived at the ground, only to be told that the match was being played elsewhere, and then were told to return to the original ground!

OW’s came well prepared with a squad of 14, and three spectators providing encouragement from the side line. They started brightly and mounted pressure on the Valence defence; however Sutton Valence broke away against the run of play and were awarded a short corner. The short corner strike unfortunately clipped the foot of a defender, resulting in a penalty flick being given. Goalkeeper Lawrence Claughton got down well and was unlucky to have the ball creep under his pad and across the line.

OW’s bounced back and applied a lot of pressure in the Sutton Valence goal mouth, resulting in two goals in quick succession – one from a short corner struck cleanly by newly wed Stewart Seymour, the other from open play by Mark King. Sutton Valance thought that they had levelled the score but the goal was disallowed as the ball had hit a Valence foot.

OW’s then applied more pressure with some good interplay between Michael Tyrrell, Tom Pinder and Mark King – eventually enabling Mark King to get on the score sheet again.

Stewart Seymour scored again from a short corner just before the stroke of half time when Josh Sullivan caused problems for the left back down the flank and was fouled in the circle. Half time score: 4-1 to OW’s .

Sutton Valence came out with determination in the second half and scored when a hard shot across the circle was deflected into the goal by a Valence attacker. Again OW’s replied– this time when Adam Tyrrell linked up well with Tom Pinder to slot home OW’s fifth.

The game moved from end to end, and there were some impressive performances in the OW’s defence line from Charlie Smith, Alex Cairns, JJ Horsington and Matt the man!

Valence snatched a third goal with a shot from the top of the circle. OW’s added another two goals to their tally – giving Stewart Seymour and Mark King their hat tricks.

Overall this was a good team performance. OW’s should be pleased with this result – this was an encouraging start to the season.
