Match Report 15-11-08

Old Bordenians 1          0      :       OW Ladies 1          6

Old Williamsonians (OW’s) travelled to newly promoted Old Bordenians (OB’s) in a motivated mood – determined to maintain their position at the top of the table and extend their unbeaten record.

An early start meant OW’s had to be ready from the whistle and they rose to the occasion. Within the first five minutes Marissa Alves successfully converted a short corner with a superb strike. This set the tone and a second goal came in the next five minutes when a through ball from of one of the joint players of the match – Marissa Alves, was deftly picked up by Michelle Russell who with only the keeper to beat fired the ball into the corner.

OW’s kept up the pressure with most of the play taking place in the OB’s half. Eventually the pressure was rewarded when a short corner was superbly converted by Michelle Russell into the top corner after some swift interplay in the D. Further pressure led to another short corner: Dawn Wallwork’s follow up shot pinged off the post only to be met by Marissa Alves who slotted home from close range. Half time 4-0.

The second half started with OB’s trying to press forward in the hope of getting back into the game. Their efforts were unsuccessful though, as the OW’s defence comprising Liz Tyrrell, Lucinda De Grey, Deb Pentecost and Sarah Swain were solid and determined to keep a clean sheet.

The next goal came when a quick clearance from an OB’s short corner found Dawn Wallwork who fed the ball through to Michelle Russell. Russell then swept the ball to joint player of the match Naomi Ledger who returned the pass to Russell, and Russell neatly converted.

OB’s did not give up and kept trying to attack, but OW’s were not finished yet. From the final short corner of the game Michelle Russell grabbed her fourth goal when she latched onto an attempted clearance by the goalkeeper, ending the game 6-0.

This was an epic performance from every member of the OW’s team.

Team: Sally Kelly, Deb Pentecost, Lucinda De Gray, Marissa Alves, Annie Jeffery, Sally Bryant, Deb Sullivan, Dawn Wallwork, Ronnie Cocks, Michelle Russell, Erin Denham, Naomi Ledger, Liz Tyrrell, Sarah Swain

Match Report 8-11-08

OW Ladies 1           4     :       Marden           2

OW’s ladies first string returned to league action this week against Marden. OW’s started sluggishly and took a while to gel, but eventually they got going and created some good attacking opportunities. A number of short corners were awarded but shots were either parried away or were sent wide. It was Marden who were the first to score though - on a breakaway attack. OW’s came back strong and forced a series of short corners – one of which was converted by Marissa Alves.

Play then went from end to end with OW’s retaining the majority of the possession, but again Marden went ahead on a breakaway attack. OW’s stepped up their game and started to string some fluent passing together – Ronnie Cocks and Dawn Wallwork played some lovely two-touch hockey on the left flank and Erin Denham combined well with Sally Bryant on the right. Eventually after some more goal mouth action, OW’s were awarded another short corner. This time Dawn Wallwork hit the ball out to Marissa Alves and Alves’s well struck reverse stick shot found the back board. Michelle Russell was instrumental in OW’s third goal – when after another short corner Russell’s shot at goal was tapped in at the near post by Dawn Wallwork. Half time 3-2.

In the second half OW’s continued to play with vigour and zest and allowed Marden only a few attacking breaks. The fourth and final goal eventually came for OW’s when after more pressure another short corner was awarded. This time a super strike by Marissa Alves beat the goal keeper.

The final minutes of the game were spent in OW’s half, but joint player-of-the-match winners Lucinda De Grey and Marissa Alves maintained control and thwarted any potential danger, and Sally Kelly in goal produced one particularly good save.

OW’s still remain top – still remain unbeaten – still flying high.

Team: Sally Kelly, Deb Pentecost, Lucinda De Gray, Marissa Alves, Annie Jeffery, Sally Bryant, Deb Sullivan, Dawn Wallwork, Ronnie Cocks, Michelle Russell, Erin Denham

Match Report 1-11-08

OW Ladies 1           7     :       Burnt Ash           1

It was an early start for this friendly match for OW Ladies first string against Burnt Ash. The weather was appalling – blustery and wet, and to make matters worse OW’s played this match with only ten players. But this didn’t worry OW’s and they came out strong from the whistle.

After a spell of pressure Marissa Alves opened the scoring with a superb strike after a solo run from the wing into the circle, dodging a number of tackles on the way.

OW’s enjoyed considerable pressure and their one-two passing frustrated Burnt Ash. Eventually OW’s were awarded a free hit just outside the ‘D’ which was quickly taken by Annie Jeffery who found Dawn Wallwork, and Wallwork flicked the ball into the net. OW’s continued to play good flowing hockey and made good use of the wings with Annie Jeffery and Sally Bryant both making telling runs down the flanks.

The third goal came after more goalmouth action – this time Marissa Alves’s telling pass was deftly stabbed home by Sally Bryant after she bravely dived at full stretch. Debbie Pentecost, Sarah Swain and Liz Tyrrell contained any breakaway attacks by Burnt Ash, and Sue Turnbull in goal was alert on the rare occasion that she was troubled.

The fourth goal came just before half time – again by Marissa Alves: this time from a wonderful short corner strike. Half time 4-0 .

The second half started in the same vein as the end of the first – with OW’s on the attack. Lucinda De Grey and Marissa Alves linked up seamlessly in the middle of the park and provided some wonderful attacking opportunities for Deb Sullivan and Dawn Wallwork up front. Eventually the fifth goal came – this time Dawn Wallwork was able to convert from close range, and this was quickly followed with another when Deb Sullivan’s cheeky reverse stick shot found its way into the corner of the goal.

By this time most of the OW players were over the half way mark, and a rare breakaway attack by Burnt Ash resulted in a consolation goal. However OW’s put the game to bed with the seventh and final goal when Marissa Alves scored her third (and her hat trick) from a short corner.

OW’s will look to build on this impressive display and are determined to maintain their unbeaten run as they head back into league action next Saturday when they take on Marden at home. OW Ladies would like to thank Pete Meyers for agreeing to umpire for the ladies at the last minute!

Team: Sue Turnbull, Deb Pentecost, Lucinda De Gray, Liz Tyrrell, Marissa Alves, Annie Jeffery, Sally Bryant, Deb Sullivan, Dawn Wallwork, Sarah Swain
