Match Report 15-11-08

Old Williamsonians  4        2     :       Deal 2        2

After two close defeats, the OW's had a tough task on their hands against the league leaders, the match ending in a fair draw. With both sides fielding probably stronger than normal teams it seemed destined to be a close fought encounter which, had both sides taken advantage of their numerous short corners, could easily have been a real goal feast but for some excellent goalkeeping and defending.

After some even early exchanges Deal took the lead after 20 minutes when, belying what was to follow, they scored from a well worked short corner routine and a crisp finish. However, OW's quickly levelled when Butchers astute through ball was collected by Peter Winbolt who slotted home under some pressure. The early exchanges were notable for some crisp tackling by skipper Paul Judge and Kevin Swindin against some talented and speedy visitors and credit must also be given to young OW keeper Sam Pepper, in only his second game at this level who performed admirably throughout belying his years - a fine prospect for the Old Boys.

With the second half continuing in an attacking fashion many chances were created at both ends with Sam Budd and Alfie Mason doing a lot of good work on the flanks for the home side. They were ,however, grateful for a fine defensive performance by Pete Meyers whose numerous last ditch tackles saved the day on several crucial occasions.

After having a goal ruled out for a back-stick offence, the visitors took the lead with 15 minutes to go, following a bit of ping-pong in the D, the ball falling nicely to a well placed attacker who scored from close range. The OW's continued to press without ever looking particularly penetrative so they were grateful to equalise with 10 minutes to go when a neat bit of work in midfield involving Butcher again and Ashley Pentecost led to the ball being switched to Winbolt who skilfully avoided two defenders and slotted the ball calmly past the advancing keeper for a neat finish.

With the end coming soon after both sides adjourned to the bar and general agreement that the end result was a just one - it was easy to see why the visitors are leading the division with an excellent brand of attacking hockey, but the OW's were equally pleased to have matched them for quality and effort and to glean some reward for an excellent days hockey.

Many thanks again to Umpires Paul Meehan, Andy Wallace and second -half umpire sub Andy Routledge - cheers guys, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

TEAM: Pepper, Meyers, Judge, Swindin, Tulppo, Harris, Pentecost[A], Butcher, Budd, Winbolt, Mason, MacDonald.

Match Report 8-11-08

Anchorians 5        3     :       Old Williamsonians  4        2

Another absorbing game in a division throwing up some terrific matches in which the Old Boys are involved. Both sides deserve credit for an extremely open game, in fairness, the score could easily have been double but for some great goalkeeping by both custodians and last ditch defending. OW's started well with some nice interplay with the returning Sam Budd and Jack MacDonald combining well down the right. Strangely, in view of the nature of the match, few clear cut chances were created by either side, but OW's took the lead when, following good work by MacDonald, the ball was well controlled by Mick O'Shea who spectacularly fired the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Continued pressure by the visitors paid dividends shortly after when a loose ball was picked up by Alex Gaul, whose shot took a deflection off a home stick , wrong-footing the home keeper. However, slack marking [not the only time] from a free hit resulted in a chance for the Anchs whose excellent young winger Owen converted from close range with keeper Tony Harrold left exposed.

The 2nd half was pretty much a different pattern. The home side made a couple of personnel changes which altered the complexion of the game, and they looked far more dangerous coming forward with fast and incisive attacks not evident in the first half. From one such attack the home side got a man over and despite the efforts of the Willies defence a rebound off Meyers and then Harrold fell to young Owen who equalised from close range.

Both sides continued to press, with failed short corners from both sides a feature of the half. Despite much huffing and puffing the OW's rarely created clear chances, despite the continued promptings of Mason and Bage, and at the other end only some more fine keeping by Harrold kept the scores level. However the OW's were to pay the price for over-committing up front. A quick attack following an OW breakdown left the visitors short at the back and with some slick passing created a clear chance calmly converted to give Anchs the lead.

OW's continued to press and the home side were grateful to their impressive keeper who made a couple of last ditch blocks to foil Winbolt and Bage at the death. The OW's current playing formation leaves their attack a little narrow, although the energetic Budd compensates from the back when in the side. In the end, it was poor marking which led to the OW's downfall something which they need to address in future matches.

As ever grateful thanks to Paul Meehan and his Anchorian colleague for some thoughtful and decisive umpiring, appreciated by both sides during a terrific game. To my mind, the standard of play at this level is a credit to all clubs coaching policies - long may it continue.

Team: Harrold, Meyers, Budd, Horsington, Gaul, MacDonald, D.Bage, O'Shea, Mason, Tyrell, Winbolt . Sub: Judge.

Match Report 1-11-08

Old Williamsonians  4        0     :       Cliftonville 4        2

In poor playing conditions , credit must be given to both sides for producing an excellent match , with the visitors deserving of their victory in the end. With a few personnel changes from the previous week the OW's were a little off the pace initially with the visitors quick forwards a constant threat to the home defence. However , well marshalled by Swindin & Meyers , they held firm and gradually got a hold in the game with Horsington and Hanman pushing forward with purpose. Unfortunately a heavy collision involving the home striker Peter Winbolt and the oppo goalie led to a lengthy injury break , disrupting the home sides formation. This led to Andy Stoute being pushed up front but few good chances were created , although both keepers made good saves from short corners.

The visitors came hard at the OW's in the 2nd half and following a quick break , and a terrific reaction save from the busy home keeper Laurence Claughton which deserved a better fate, the ball was switched to an unmarked forward who scored from close range. OW's kept working hard with, in particular Anthony Coveney producing an exceptional performance on the left, but all of the prompting was well handled by the visitors defence, meaning the OW's created few clear chances.

With a couple of minutes left, and the OW's committed forward another fast break resulted in another short corner which Cliftonville worked nicely for their 2nd goal. However the OW's were not too downhearted, having played well against strong opposition and been beaten by the better side on the day.It is certainly a fixture which will be keenly anticipated in the return after Xmas.

A big thank you to the two Andys who umpired the game keeping it flowing as much as possible.

TEAM : Claughton, Meyers, Swindin, Judge, Horsington, Coveney, Stoute, Hanman, Tyrrell, Winbolt, MacDonald.
